Druze armed groups in Damascus have begun surrendering heavy weapons to the Syrian Interior Ministry, as part of an agreement reached between Druze leaders and government officials earlier this month.
The disarmament process was launched in Jaramana, a neighborhood in the capital Damascus, in accordance with the "weapons surrender" clause of the May 1 agreement between Druze representatives and security forces.
According to reports, the same disarmament process is currently being implemented in Sahnaya and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya neighborhoods.
Mohammed Sayyed, deputy director of the Eastern Ghouta Region, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the Interior Ministry is receiving the heavy weapons in a phased manner.
"The people of Jaramana, along with community leaders and clerics, are actively supporting this process," Sayyed said. He also noted that in the coming days, light weapons are expected to be handed over, and that many individuals have already registered to join the country’s security institutions.
Sayyed also emphasized that in the future, only the Interior and Defense Ministries will be authorized to possess weapons.
"We hope that this implementation will set an example for the rest of the country," he added.
