Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg to review recent bilateral planning efforts, preparations for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 2026 visit to Cairo, and ongoing developments in Gaza.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the meeting included an exchange of views on developments in Gaza, with both ministers stressing the importance of implementing the latest U.N. Security Council resolution and enabling the international stabilization force to carry out its duties.

The meeting also addressed preparations for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Cairo in 2026 to chair the second meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council.

They also highlighted Egypt’s efforts to uphold the Sharm el-Sheikh peace agreement and advance reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.

The two ministers also discussed several regional issues of mutual interest as part of ongoing coordination between Cairo and Ankara on regional and international matters.

Regular consultations, lasting coordination

Egypt and Türkiye held the inaugural meeting of their Joint Planning Group in Ankara on Wednesday, as senior officials from both countries signaled accelerating momentum toward restoring full strategic cooperation.

Abdelatty described his current visit, his third this year, as evidence of the “growing momentum” in bilateral relations and reiterated Cairo’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ankara across multiple fields.

Recently, Egypt activated annual cooperation mechanisms between the two countries through their joint chairmanship of the Egypt–Türkiye Joint Planning Group, which brought together ministerial and technical committees in regular meetings to pave the way for the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council scheduled to convene in Cairo in 2026.

Analysts of the situation believe that these efforts are “practical steps” that would elevate bilateral relations to a full strategic partnership.
