Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty will visit Türkiye on Wednesday for the inaugural meeting of the Türkiye–Egypt Joint Planning Group (JPG), Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said Friday.
The meeting, co-chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, will mark a key step toward preparations for the second Türkiye–Egypt High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC), set to take place in Cairo in 2026 under the leadership of the two countries’ presidents.
The Joint Planning Group was created as part of a joint declaration signed on Feb. 14, 2024, laying the foundation for the HLSCC mechanism. The JPG functions as a platform to enhance bilateral coordination and prepare the agenda for council meetings.
As part of Abdelatty'svisit, Fidan is expected to discuss ongoing negotiations on several bilateral agreements encompassing political, economic, commercial and military ties.
The ministers will also address efforts to increase cooperation in investment, energy, transportation, connectivity and the defense industry. Both countries are aiming to raise their bilateral trade volume to $15 billion in the near future.
Fidan will emphasize the importance of upholding the ceasefire in Gaza and is expected to note that while Israel has violated the ceasefire terms, the Palestinian side has complied with the conditions responsibly.
He will also reaffirm Türkiye’s readiness to contribute to Gaza’s reconstruction and call on the international community to support humanitarian rebuilding efforts.
On regional issues, the ministers will evaluate paths to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and unity, and exchange views on ongoing efforts for lasting stability in Libya.
Fidan is also expected to discuss ways Türkiye and Egypt can jointly contribute to stability, prosperity and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The war in Sudan will also be on the agenda. Ankara remains concerned about the conflict and will reiterate its support for Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty, while underlining the need for dialogue to reach a peaceful resolution.
Diplomatic ties between Türkiye and Egypt have strengthened considerably through increased high-level exchanges in recent years.
Fidan visited Egypt on Aug. 9 and also accompanied President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during an official visit to Cairo on Oct. 13 for the “Peace for Sharm el-Sheikh” initiative.
Abdelattylast visited Türkiye on Feb.
Egypt is Türkiye’s largest trade and export partner in Africa. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $8.8 billion—with Turkish exports totaling $4.2 billion and imports $4.6 billion. Turkish investments in Egypt currently amount to $4 billion.
Officials say the growing momentum in bilateral cooperation is not only boosting economic ties but also reinforcing both countries’ positions in promoting regional peace and security.
