A ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthis toward Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, was intercepted and destroyed, the Saudi-led coalition said Monday.
Several powerful explosions rattled Riyadh on Monday night, moments after residents received a text message warning of an aerial threat.
“The area is under a hostile aerial threat. Please remain calm, stay indoors or in a safe place away from windows and doors,” the message read.
The coalition said the missile was destroyed before reaching its target.
The announcement followed notices from Saudi Civil Defense saying the danger had passed in Riyadh, minutes after an early warning was briefly issued over a “potential danger.”
The incident came amid escalating attacks by the Houthis on Saudi airports, cities and energy facilities in recent days.
Riyadh has faced repeated Houthi attacks in recent days, with strikes on King Khalid International Airport over two days forcing the temporary suspension of operations.
