Several explosions were reported early Thursday across coastal areas of southern Iran, including the towns of Sirik and Minab and the island of Qeshm, according to Iranian state and semi-official media.
Iran's official IRNA news agency said multiple areas in Sirik were struck by what it described as "hostile projectiles," though it did not provide additional details on casualties, damage or the origin of the strikes.
The semi-official Fars News Agency reported explosions in Sirik, Minab and on Qeshm Island, citing local authorities who said the sounds appeared to come from the direction of the sea. The reports did not specify the number or scale of the explosions.
The latest incidents follow a similar report from Wednesday, when Fars said an explosion originating from the sea had been heard in the southern part of the Iranian city of Jask.
The explosions come as tensions simmer between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula that serves as one of the world's most critical corridors for oil and gas shipments.
A significant share of global seaborne petroleum exports passes through the strait, making any disruption to traffic there a matter of concern for international energy markets.
Despite a memorandum signed in June that laid out a potential agreement to reopen the strait as a step toward a broader peace deal, the coastal towns hit Thursday, Sirik, Minab, Qeshm and Jask, all lie along or near the Hormuz corridor, underscoring the strategic sensitivity of the area.
As of Thursday, no group or government had claimed responsibility for the blasts, and Iranian authorities had not detailed the extent of any damage or injuries.
