Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iranian leader Mujtaba Khamenei and one of Iran’s prominent political figures, warned U.S. President Donald Trump over his threats against Tehran, saying that following Israel’s lead would carry a high cost.
Velayati made the remarks in a post on the U.S. social media platform X, where he argued that Trump had returned “empty-handed” from his visit to China.
He said Trump’s threats, which he claimed had intensified with encouragement from Tel Aviv, amounted to entering a “strategic trap.”
Velayati claimed there had been miscalculations in Washington over Iran.
“The barren diplomacy of Trump in Beijing and returning empty-handed from China; the desperation and anger of Abu Dhabi over the revelation of the news of Netanyahu’s secret trip to this country; and the Pentagon’s dubious data fabrications are indicative of a calculative crisis in Washington,” he said.
Velayati said the reported revelation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi’s reaction and what he called Pentagon “data fabrications” showed a crisis in U.S. calculations.
Velayati said that, under those conditions, Trump’s threats were being inflamed by Tel Aviv and risked dragging Washington into a trap.
“In such coordinates, Trump’s threats, which are inflamed by the puffings of Tel Aviv, amount to entering a strategic trap,” he said.
He warned that the U.S. would lose its credibility in West Asia if it carried out a possible attack on Iran.
“Falling into this pit with Israel’s rope comes at a heavy cost; soon, Washington will have to search with a lantern for the remnants of its credibility in West Asia,” Velayati said.
