A new vessel operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, named Madleen, set sail Sunday from the port of Catania, Italy, with the aim of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza amid growing international concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the enclave.

The 18-meter-long sailing boat departed from San Giovanni Li Cuti Port as part of the coalition’s latest mission to break the Israeli blockade and provide assistance to the besieged Palestinian population.

Twelve people are aboard Madleen, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham — best known for his role in Game of Thrones — and Turkish activist Suayb Ordu, who gave exclusive remarks to Turkiyegazetesi.com.tr..

'It's a mission of humanity', says Turkish activist

Speaking to Turkish media outlet Ordu warned of real and imminent threats following a drone attack on another flotilla vessel, Conscience, on May 2. “These are not just threats; they are real risks that could turn into direct physical attacks,” he said. The attack caused a breach in the hull and a fire at the bow. The mission had remained confidential until then due to security concerns.

“This is not a suicide mission; it’s a mission of humanity,” Ordu said. “Remaining silent while children there die of hunger is unconscionable.”

He also criticized international institutions, stating: “If these institutions had done their jobs, we wouldn’t have to be here. Societies are silent, governments are unresponsive. That’s why we are taking action.”

Türkiye plays a major role

Ordu expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s role, saying, “The steps Türkiye has taken so far regarding Palestine are very valuable. But this should only be the beginning. International diplomatic pressure must continue to increase. Türkiye has a major role to play in this process.”

Cunningham, speaking in support of the mission, said, “The international community is violating international law. That’s why we’re here. We are doing the job they are supposed to do. Please follow us and make sure nothing happens to these wonderful people.”

In a statement, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said Madleen is carrying powdered milk, medical supplies, and other essential aid. The group emphasized that the vessel will remain entirely within international waters from European territorial waters to Palestinian waters.

“This unarmed and non-violent journey is in full compliance with international law,” the coalition said. “Any attack or interference will be a deliberate and unlawful act against civilians.”

Israel has faced mounting international criticism over the deteriorating conditions in Gaza. In May, the United Nations warned that the entire population was at risk of famine. The health ministry in Gaza said on Saturday that at least 4,149 people have been killed since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, bringing the total death toll since the conflict began to 54,418, mostly civilians.
