The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate announced that 706 family members of journalists in Gaza have been killed since Israel began its military operations in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
According to a report published by the Freedoms Committee of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Israeli military attacks on Palestinian journalists have extended beyond direct targeting through killing, wounding, detention or obstruction of news coverage.
The report stated that attacks on journalists have escalated to a "more dangerous and brutal dimension" by targeting journalists' families, transforming journalism into a burden where children, spouses and parents pay the price.
The syndicate emphasized that the targeting of journalists' families has become a systematic and continuous practice throughout 2023, 2024 and 2025. During this period, approximately 706 people from journalist families in the Gaza Strip lost their lives.
Documentation shows journalists have been targeted through various methods, the report noted, including direct bombing of journalists' homes, strikes on shelters, and repeated targeting of neighborhoods where journalists and their families reside.
Data published on the syndicate's official website indicates that 256 journalists have been killed during Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military has detained 49 journalists, while 535 have been wounded in the strikes.
The military operations have also destroyed 150 media organizations, according to the syndicate's figures.
The syndicate's documentation reflects what press freedom organizations have described as one of the deadliest periods for journalists in recent history. International humanitarian law requires the protection of civilians, including journalists, during armed conflict.
