Greek Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas praised Nikitas Stamatelopoulos, a Greek Revolt figure known by the nickname “Nikitaras the Turk-eater,” in a social media post that was later removed by X for violating platform rules.
Dimas commemorated Stamatelopoulos, also known as Nikitaras, in a post on X on Monday and shared photos from a ceremony held in front of a monument built in his name.
“We honor the hero Nikitas Stamatelopoulos, known as Nikitaras the Turk-eater!” Dimas wrote.
The remarks drew reactions over Stamatelopoulos’ association with massacres targeting Turkish civilians during the Greek Revolt.
Dimas’ post was removed by X a few hours after it was published on the grounds that it violated platform rules.
The platform did not immediately provide further public details on the specific rule cited in the removal.
Stamatelopoulos was among the figures who fought against the Ottoman army during the Greek Revolt, which began in 1821.
He was widely known by the nickname “Turkofagos,” meaning “Turk-eater” in Greek.
The nickname has long been associated with his role in violence against Turks during the revolt, including massacres targeting civilians.
