A 40-year-old man was allegedly beaten and abandoned in a remote field by an off-duty police officer in Xanthi, Greece, who reportedly stated that he mistook the individual for an “illegal migrant.” The incident was reported on Sunday.
According to the report, the officer handcuffed the victim, placed him in the trunk of a vehicle, and drove him to the secluded location where the alleged assault took place. The victim was later left behind, and his belongings were reportedly returned.
The victim, a Greek citizen living in Germany who had returned to Xanthi to visit family, reportedly has serious health conditions that make communication difficult. His lawyer said the man was returning from a nearby supermarket when a jeep stopped him, and a man in civilian clothes identified himself as a police officer. The victim was handcuffed, assaulted, placed in the trunk, and abandoned about a kilometer away, with his belongings left at the scene.
The Hellenic Police (ELAS) confirmed the officer’s arrest, stating he faces charges of misconduct, unlawful detention, and bodily harm. Disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated.
“The Hellenic Police demonstrates zero tolerance for behavior inconsistent with its mission and role, immediately activating all necessary legal and disciplinary procedures,” the statement said.
