Groups protesting government policies held a demonstration in the center of Thessaloniki on Saturday, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered a speech marking the opening of the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).
The demonstration, led by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY), drew labor unions, retirees, students, political groups and farmers to the city center.
Protesters called for higher wages and salaries, stronger collective bargaining agreements, and measures to address the rising cost of living. Retirees also demanded increased pensions amid rising inflation.
Farmers gathered with their tractors in front of the White Tower. Parking their vehicles around the landmark, they protested the government's economic policies and drew attention to the financial hardships they face.
Authorities implemented extensive security measures across Thessaloniki due to the demonstrations.
Roughly 4,000 police officers were deployed in the city center.
As part of the security plan, police units were stationed at key locations, drones conducted surveillance, and preventive checks were carried out.
The demonstrations, which drew thousands of participants, ended without incident.
