Hamas on Sunday condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s entry into areas beneath Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Al-Buraq Wall, calling the visit an assault on the site’s identity and status.
In a statement on Telegram, Hamas said Netanyahu entered tunnels and excavation sites beneath Al-Aqsa Mosque, accompanied by what the group described as “provocative statements.”
“Al-Aqsa Mosque—in its entirety including its courtyards, prayer halls, walls, and gates—will remain an exclusively Islamic mosque,” Hamas said.
The group also rejected Israeli excavations, incursions and religious rituals at the site, saying they would not change what it described as Al-Aqsa’s Islamic identity.
The Jerusalem Governorate of Palestine said Netanyahu, several Israeli ministers and thousands of Israeli occupiers entered the Western Wall plaza in occupied East Jerusalem early Sunday under tight security.
According to the governorate, thousands reached the plaza after passing through Wadi Street in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Large numbers of Palestinians were also in the area to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque and shop in the Old City.
With Yom Kippur approaching, the Jerusalem Governorate called on Palestinians to gather at Al-Aqsa Mosque and resist Israeli incursions.
It urged Palestinians to “thwart the occupation’s plans.”
