The head of Hamas’ political bureau abroad, Khaled Meshaal, said that the Palestinian resistance is putting forward realistic and practical approaches that would ensure Israel is not subjected to a new attack from the Gaza Strip, without requiring disarmament.

He added, in an interview with Al Jazeera, that governance in Gaza must be Palestinian and that it is the Palestinian people who should decide and who should rule.

Meshaal noted that the real threat comes from Israel, not from Gaza, which they are demanding be disarmed.

He also stressed that providing relief to the Gaza Strip is essential to push toward moving into the second phase of the agreement to end the war, explaining that Hamas is working by all possible means to achieve this goal.

Disarmament seen as removal of Palestinians’ soul

Meshaal stated that the Palestinian cause has regained its vitality on the regional stage, moving out of the drawers and imposing itself on all actors.

He continued that Gaza has given all it could and that it is time for the Strip to recover, focus on itself and rebuild life anew. He added that Gaza is no longer expected to resume military action, but described disarmament for Palestinians as “the removal of their very soul.”

Meshaal said, “We have informed the mediators that Gaza needs those who will help it rise and recover once again.”

Mediators urged to step in

Hossam Badran, a senior official in Hamas, said Tuesday that the Gaza cease-fire cannot proceed to its second phase as long as Israeli “violations” persist, calling on mediators to pressure Israel to respect the deal.

“The second phase cannot begin as long as the occupation (Israel) continues its violations of the agreement and evades its commitments,” Hamas political bureau member Hossam Badran told AFP, referring to the fragile ceasefire that came into effect on Oct. 10.

“Hamas has asked the mediators to pressure the occupation to complete the implementation of the first phase,” he added.
