Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for continued efforts to secure lasting peace and stability in the Middle East during talks Friday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi.
The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and recent developments in the Middle East, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Modi reiterated India’s position that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
“He also underscored the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, and the safety and well-being of seafarers,” the ministry said.
The meeting took place as India hosts the BRICS summit amid the ongoing war between the U.S. and Iran.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has since expanded to include several other countries.
Modi also met U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the summit, according to a separate statement from India’s Foreign Ministry.
The two discussed the importance of multipolarity, ongoing conflicts, freedom of navigation, artificial intelligence, developments in renewable energy and global food security.
