Funeral ceremonies for Iran’s former leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack on Feb. 28, will be held in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, Iranian media reported.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that Mohammad Amin Tavakolizadeh, deputy mayor of Tehran for social and cultural affairs, said funeral programs had been planned in three cities.
Tavakolizadeh did not provide a date for the ceremonies, but said details of the program would be announced soon.
Tavakolizadeh said the funeral ceremony in Tehran is expected to last at least 24 hours.
After the ceremony in the capital, Khamenei’s body is expected to be transferred to Qom for another funeral program.
The body will then be taken to Mashhad for a similar ceremony.
Tavakolizadeh said the final burial place is planned to be the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.
Khamenei was killed in the early moments of the war that began with U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran on Feb. 28.
His residence on the Palestine Street in Tehran was targeted during the attack.
His wife, daughter-in-law, and 14-month-old grandchild were also killed in the strike.
The funeral ceremonies are expected to take place across three major Iranian cities before the planned burial in Mashhad.
