Iran will give priority in the Strait of Hormuz to vessels that quickly comply with new protocols and pay fees for security and safety services, a senior Iranian official said Saturday, after Tehran reimposed restrictions on ship passage through the strategic waterway.
The official told CNN that, given limits on the number of vessels that will be allowed to pass, Iran had decided to prioritize those that respond more quickly to the new Strait of Hormuz protocols and pay the costs of security and safety services.
According to the official, vessels that do not pay the fees will have their passage "postponed."
On Saturday, Iran reimposed restrictions on the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing what it described as "repeated breaches of trust" by the U.S. in the two sides' ceasefire.
The senior official described the prioritization measure as part of Iran's efforts to manage maritime traffic "in light of the new order governing this strait."
Iran said the policy would apply amid limitations on the number of vessels permitted to transit the strait.
