Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Wednesday it launched missile and drone strikes on U.S. bases in Erbil, Iraq, in retaliation for U.S. attacks on IRGC targets in Iran the previous evening.
In a statement, the IRGC said the strikes targeted several facilities and pieces of equipment belonging to the U.S. military.
It claimed that a maintenance center and technical equipment warehouses were destroyed during the attack.
The statement also said the guidance system of a U.S. surveillance balloon inside the base was struck.
The IRGC further claimed that fuel storage facilities at the base caught fire and that some U.S. personnel were killed in the strikes.
No additional details were provided in the statement on the number of casualties.
Iran said the operation was carried out in direct retaliation for U.S. strikes launched against Revolutionary Guard targets in Iran on Tuesday evening.
U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, said Tuesday evening that U.S. forces had begun attacks against IRGC targets inside Iran.
Following CENTCOM’s announcement, Iranian media reported hearing explosions in several locations, including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar and Konarak.
The IRGC later announced the missile and drone attack on U.S. bases in Erbil as its response to those strikes.
