Iran said Thursday that it had targeted Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport and an Israeli air force base in the area.
“The heavy Khorramshahr-4 missiles carrying 1-tonne warheads were launched at dawn today ... toward the heart of Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion airport and the base of the Israeli air force's 27th squadron located at the airport,” Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement carried by the Tasnim news agency.
The statement came as flights are expected to resume at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.
According to a report by the Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post, Israir, one of the country’s two small airlines, said it plans to operate five flights to Ben Gurion Airport on Thursday from Rome, Berlin, Athens, Batumi and Rovaniemi.
Arkia will also resume flights to the airport alongside Israir.
Israel’s two airlines, Israir and Arkia, said the country’s airspace is expected to gradually reopen and flights to Ben Gurion Airport will resume within this framework.
At the initial stage, only one passenger aircraft per hour will be allowed to land at the airport.
Iran has launched missiles and drones toward Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets since Feb. 28. Some of the attacks have caused casualties and damage to civilian sites, including ports and residential buildings.
Tehran says the attacks came in response to a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that has killed hundreds of people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military officials.
