Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Sunday it was “natural” that no agreement was reached with the United States after a single day of talks in Islamabad, citing deep mistrust following the recent conflict.

Speaking to Iranian state television, Baqaei said the indirect negotiations between U.S. and Iranian delegations in Pakistan’s capital took place in a climate shaped by distrust and suspicion after what he described as a 40-day war.

“These talks were held in an atmosphere dominated not only by distrust but also by doubt and suspicion, following a 40-day war initiated for the second time within nine months by the US and Israel,” he said.

“Therefore, it is natural that no agreement was reached in a single meeting. In any case, no one had such an expectation.”

Strait of Hormuz, sanctions among sticking points

Baqaei said the complexity of the agenda, particularly issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional dynamics, made the negotiations more difficult.

While progress was made on several issues, disagreements on “two or three key points” prevented a deal with Washington, he said.

He did not clarify whether further rounds of talks would be held.

In a separate post on X, Baqaei said discussions over the past 24 hours covered “various dimensions” of the core negotiation agenda.

These included the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, war reparations, sanctions relief, and the complete end of the war against Iran and in the wider region.

Iran says success depends on US ‘good faith’

“The success of this diplomatic process depends on the seriousness and good faith of the opposing side, refraining from excessive demands and unlawful requests, and the acceptance of Iran’s legitimate rights and interests,” Baqaei said.

He also thanked Pakistan for hosting the negotiations and facilitating the diplomatic effort.

“We appreciate the government and the warm-hearted and noble people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for hosting the negotiations and their benevolent efforts in advancing this process,” he said.

Iran’s Mehr News Agency later reported that the Iranian delegation had departed Pakistan.

The direct and indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran, mediated by Pakistan in Islamabad, lasted around 21 hours but concluded without an agreement.
