Iran's delegation to the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) has no plans for new Iran-U.S. talks in New York, a source close to the delegation told state news agency IRNA on Monday, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects more talks this week.
Tehran conveyed its positions to Washington through a Qatari mediator last Tuesday and is waiting for a response, the source said, adding that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will return home Tuesday.
The two sides remain far apart after Trump on Saturday rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
Iran wants talks focused on Hormuz and the U.S. naval blockade, while Washington is demanding nuclear concessions.
The source rejected what it called contradictory reports about Iran-U.S. negotiations in New York.
"The considerations and positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran were conveyed explicitly and transparently to the American side via the Qatari mediator last Tuesday, and Iran is waiting to receive the American side's response," the source told IRNA.
"Accordingly, there is no plan for a new round of negotiations with the American side on the agenda of Iran's delegation, and the foreign minister will return home on Tuesday after carrying out the planned programs," the source said.
Iran says it presented seven conditions for ending the war and reopening the strait, including a ceasefire across the region that covers Lebanon, the unfreezing of its foreign assets, the lifting of oil sanctions and an end to the U.S. naval blockade.
Trump told Axios on Sunday that he expects U.S. negotiators to hold more talks with Iran this week.
"They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make. It is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago. They overplayed their hand," Trump said.
Asked whether he is considering resuming strikes on Iran, Trump said: "I am always thinking about it."
Two regional sources told Axios they expect another round of indirect talks as early as Monday. Qatari mediators have given both sides a compromise proposal to review, a regional source said.
Trump said more than 20 million barrels of oil transited the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, the most since the war began. A U.S. defense official told Axios that 22 million barrels were exported through the strait on Friday night.
The U.S. has not struck Iran since Sept. 1, though vessels are regularly hit in the strait.
Araghchi told NBC News on Sunday that Iran still wants a diplomatic solution.
"We only care about our national interests. We are ready for negotiations," he said.
"Although we heard from President Trump that he's rejecting this deal ... we are still waiting for an official response through the mediators," Araghchi added.
He said Iran is also "fully prepared" to respond to any renewed attack.
The U.S. and Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran in February, targeting government buildings, military sites, missile infrastructure and air defenses, prompting Iranian missile and drone strikes against Israel and U.S. bases across the region.
The conflict has since expanded across the region, with diplomatic efforts continuing to end the hostilities.
The ongoing war with Iran, now in its seventh month, has claimed the lives of 18 U.S. service members and triggered sustained volatility across global energy routes.
