Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said Sunday that U.S. forces attacked the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan with multiple projectiles.
The agency said the attack occurred at about 3:39 a.m. local time at the nuclear facility in the Darkhovin, also known as Karun, area.
In a statement published on the U.S.-based social media platform X and carried by Iranian state television, the organization said U.S. forces targeted the construction site in what it described as an aggressive act contrary to international law.
“U.S. forces, in an aggressive and brutal act contrary to international law, attacked the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant with several projectiles on Sunday,” the organization said.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran condemned the attack and said the site was a peaceful nuclear facility covered by International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
It described an attack on a peaceful nuclear facility under IAEA supervision as a clear crime against international law.
The agency did not provide further details about damage at the site or the types of projectiles involved.
The statement came as tensions between Tehran and Washington continued to escalate.
Construction of the Darkhovin nuclear power plant began in December 2022.
The facility is planned to have a generating capacity of 300 megawatts and operate with a pressurized water reactor system.
Construction is expected to take about eight years, with the project estimated to cost $2 billion.
