Emirates Global Aluminium flagged a prolonged disruption to its operations after Iranian missile and drone strikes damaged its major production hub in Abu Dhabi, forcing a shutdown that could take up to 12 months to fully reverse.
The company said the attack hit multiple facilities at its Al Taweelah complex in the Khalifa Economic Zone on March 28, triggering a full evacuation and emergency shutdown. The damage extended across key units, including the smelter, casthouse, power plant, alumina refinery and recycling plant.
Describing the site as one of the largest aluminium production complexes globally, EGA indicated that restoring primary aluminium output will require extensive repairs and a phased restart of reduction cells.
Partial operations at the alumina refinery and recycling plant could resume sooner, depending on ongoing damage assessments. No life-threatening injuries were reported and those affected are recovering, according to the company.
Chief Executive Officer Abdulnasser Bin Kalban warned the disruption could ripple across global markets, describing Al Taweelah as a key supply chain link, and added that the company is working with customers on delayed deliveries.
Before the strike, the facility played a central role in EGA’s output. The smelter produced 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal in 2025, while the alumina refinery generated 2.4 million tons, covering 46% of the company’s requirements. The recycling plant added an annual capacity of 185,000 tonnes.
Iran targeted regional industrial facilities with missile and drone strikes last week in retaliation for U.S.-Israeli attacks on its soil, which hit nuclear infrastructure and steel plants.
Khuzestan Steel Company and Mobarakeh Steel Company, both among the country’s leading producers, have also halted operations after sustaining heavy damage to key production units. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the strikes destroyed about 70% of Iran’s steel production capacity.
Iran ranked among the world’s top 10 producers, with 31.8 million tons of steel output, according to the World Steel Association.
