Iran warned Tuesday that vessels belonging to countries or companies receiving compensation from frozen Iranian assets under a U.S. proposal would be barred from passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, issued the warning in a video message carried by Iranian state media, including Tasnim News Agency and IRNA.
The statement followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that compensation for vessels damaged during the recent conflict would be paid using Iran’s blocked assets.
The spokesman said vessels damaged during what he described as the war imposed on Iran were affected by insecurity created by the U.S. military.
He also accused the vessels of using what he called an “illegal and unsafe southern route” through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the statement, Trump announced the compensation plan following what Iran described as aggressive actions and continuing U.S. attempts to destabilize the region.
Zolfaghari warned Trump about the consequences of what he called an illegal decision.
He said any company or country that accepts Trump’s proposal and receives compensation from Iran’s frozen assets would face restrictions in the strategic waterway.
“From now on, the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not allow any of their vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
