Iran warned Monday that Ukraine would face “unforeseen” consequences after an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea killed one sailor and injured others, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei described the weekend strike as illegal and unjustified and said Tehran would respond.
“This action by Ukraine was an absolutely illegal and unjustified act, contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, as well as a dangerous act of adventurism that will certainly not go unanswered by us,” Baqaei said during a weekly news briefing.
He added that the consequences of Ukraine’s action “will certainly be unforeseen.”
Iran said the strike caused the Iranian vessel to explode, killing one sailor and injuring several others.
“The Ukrainian regime must certainly be held accountable for it,” Baqaei said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Kyiv had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea against vessels transporting military cargo involving Iran.
Iran summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Tehran on Saturday after accusing the Ukrainian military of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea.
The Ukrainian diplomat was called in by Manouchehr Moradi, Iran’s assistant foreign minister and director general for Eurasia, who delivered Tehran’s protest over the overnight attack.
Iran initially said the strike killed one sailor and injured another and warned that it “will not go unanswered.”
Moradi described the attack as a “criminal” act and said Iran would firmly defend its national security and interests, state media outlet IRIB reported.
