An Iraqi security source claimed that the Iraqi government is seeking an agreement with the SDF, the Syrian offshoot of the terrorist organization the PKK/YPG, to repatriate Iraqi nationals imprisoned in Syria for ties to Daesh.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Baghdad is concerned about the fate of these detainees amid a lack of security in SDF-controlled areas and following the U.S. announcement that it plans to withdraw troops from key bases starting in September.
The agreement is reportedly being sought directly with the SDF rather than the Syrian government, as some regions in northeastern Syria remain outside full state control and the prisons holding the detainees are under SDF authority.
Iraq has previously repatriated several Iraqi Daesh terror group leaders and members, and authorities now aim to ensure the safe return of additional nationals held in Syrian facilities.
