A barrage of drones and rockets struck the Victory military base at Baghdad International Airport on Sunday, marking one of the more intense attacks on the strategically sensitive complex in recent memory.

At least nine separate attacks using drones and rockets targeted the base, which sits within the airport compound and also houses a US diplomatic facility, according to security officials who spoke to AFP.

Four members of Iraq's security forces were injured as a result of the strikes on the airport's logistics support center, according to an Iraqi security source cited by Sky News Arabia. The full extent of casualties and damage remained unclear in the immediate aftermath.

At least three of the incoming drones were intercepted and brought down. However, it was not immediately confirmed whether any of the projectiles struck the military base directly.

The Victory Base complex, located adjacent to Baghdad International Airport, has been a frequent target of rocket and drone attacks in recent years. The compound has served as a hub for US-led coalition operations and diplomatic activities since the early years of the Iraq war.

Attacks on the facility have often been attributed to Iran-aligned groups operating within Iraq, though no group had claimed responsibility for Sunday's assault at the time of the reports.

The airport complex remains one of the most heavily fortified sites in the Iraqi capital, reflecting its dual role as a civilian aviation hub and a center of military and diplomatic operations.
