Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz signaled a potential long-term Israeli presence in southern Lebanon, saying Israel would “maintain security control” in the area up to the Litani River as fighting with Hezbollah continues.
Katz made the remarks during an evaluation meeting with army commanders, discussing ongoing ground operations in Lebanon.
He said Israeli forces had targeted five bridges over the Litani River that he claimed were used by Hezbollah, and added that the Israeli army would “maintain security control” over the remaining bridges and the area up to the Litani River, indicating a potential permanent military presence.
“We continue striking in Iran with full force. Regarding Lebanon: Hezbollah made a grave mistake by attacking Israel as a tool of the Iranian terror regime, and it is paying and will continue to pay a heavy price," Katz said.
Katz added that the Israeli army continues and "will continue to operate in Lebanon with full force against Hezbollah terrorists and rocket launchers."
Citing the security of settlements in northern Israel, Katz said Israel would not allow a return to the situation before the current conflict and would prevent displaced residents from returning to southern Lebanon.
"We will not allow a return to the situation of October 7. We promised to bring security to the residents of the north, and that is exactly what we are doing," he said.
Katz also repeated his claim that the Lebanese government has not taken steps to disarm Hezbollah.
In a statement on March 2, the Israeli army said sirens were activated in northern Israel after missiles were launched from Lebanon.
The Israeli military later announced it had launched airstrikes across Lebanon, including strikes targeting the capital, Beirut, and decided to expand its ground operations in Lebanon while carrying out heavy air and naval attacks.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said 1,039 people have been killed and 2,876 injured in Israeli attacks since March 2.
The Lebanese government said the number of people forcibly displaced due to Israeli attacks and military operations reached 1.16 million, according to official records.
