The number of journalists killed by the Israeli army in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, has risen to 226 following the death of Palestinian journalist Ahmed Kalca, according to Gaza's government Media Office.

Ahmed Kalca, a cameraman working for Al-Arabi television channel, died today from severe injuries sustained in Thursday's Israeli strike on the courtyard of Al-Ehli Baptist Hospital in Gaza.

The Gaza government Media Office announced that Kalca was severely wounded in the Israeli army's attack on the hospital courtyard and succumbed to his injuries Friday.

A hospital source told Anadolu Agency yesterday that Kalca had been revived through heart massage, but his condition remained very critical.

Gaza Media Office condemns systematic targeting

In its statement, Gaza's government Media Office said the Israeli army systematically targets Palestinian journalists.

The office condemned Israel's attacks on media personnel in the strongest terms. The statement called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists Union, and the entire world to condemn Israel.

Total journalist casualties since Oct. 7

According to the Media Office statement, the number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza has reached 226 since Oct. 7, 2023. The figure includes 30 female journalists and one journalist from the occupied West Bank.

The announcement came as part of the office's regular documentation of casualties among media workers during Israel's intensive attacks on the Gaza Strip. The Media Office noted that Israel's attacks have specifically targeted journalists working to cover events in Gaza.

The strike on Al-Ehli Baptist Hospital courtyard occurred Thursday, resulting in Kalca's severe injuries that proved fatal Friday.

Hospital sources had initially reported that medical staff successfully revived Kalca through emergency procedures, but his critical condition ultimately led to his death.

Israel, rejecting international calls for a cease-fire, has pursued a genocidal offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
