Italian authorities stopped two containers carrying explosives from being shipped to Israel after port workers in Ravenna raised the alarm, local officials said Thursday.
The containers, bound for the port of Haifa, were intercepted following reports from Ravenna port workers, according to Italian media. The city government and the Emilia-Romagna regional administration acted swiftly to halt the shipment.
Ravenna Mayor Alessandro Barattoni urged the national government to prevent further weapons shipments to Israel.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Italy had not sent any weapons and emphasized that the intercepted materials were not Italian arms or munitions.
Opposition parties welcomed the move. Elly Schlein, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (PD), called on the government to take measures to ensure Italian ports are not used for weapons transport abroad.
