Jordanian air defenses intercepted and destroyed five Iranian missiles aimed at the kingdom on Wednesday, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed the attack targeted a U.S. air base in retaliation for American military actions.
The missiles were detected early Wednesday by Jordan’s surveillance and monitoring systems and destroyed under the armed forces’ approved rules of engagement, the official Petra news agency reported.
Jordanian authorities did not immediately report casualties or damage.
Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said ballistic missiles had targeted a U.S. air base in Jordan.
The IRGC said the attack was carried out in response to what it described as “the aggressive actions of the U.S. military.”
It said its operations would continue as long as “threats against the Islamic Republic of Iran” and what it called “illegal and malicious actions” by U.S. forces against Iranian interests persisted.
Wednesday’s missile interception marked the third consecutive day Jordan had come under attack. On Tuesday, the Jordanian military said it intercepted a drone after it entered the kingdom’s airspace.
A day earlier, the military announced that it had shot down two drones. Jordanian authorities did not identify the source of those drones.
