Kosovo’s Ministry of Defense has been authorized to negotiate a new Military Financial Cooperation Agreement with Türkiye Friday.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said during the cabinet meeting that the initiative constitutes an important step in strengthening Kosovo’s defense capacity.

Kurti stated the agreement provides financial support to boost the Kosovo Security Force's (FSK) professionalism and readiness. He emphasized that the partnership with Türkiye demonstrates deep cooperation and a shared commitment to regional security.

Kosovo Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci said negotiations on the agreement, which he described as important for further developing cooperation with Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense, would be carried out in accordance with existing legislation.

Following Maqedonci’s speech, the initiative was unanimously approved by cabinet members.

Türkiye is reportedly set to provide around 3.9 million ($4.49 million) to support the Kosovo Army once the agreement is concluded. Further details of the cooperation agreement were not made immediately available.

10 years long transformation process

Established in 2009 for crisis management and civil defense during natural disasters and other emergencies, the Kosovo Security Force began its 10-year transition into armed forces following legal changes in 2018.

Since 1999, Turkish soldiers have supported the Kosovo Task Force's transition into armed forces, which now utilizes extensive Turkish-made military equipment.

Additionally, a December 2024 agreement signed between the Kosovo government and Machinery and Chemical Industry Inc. (MKE) planned to establish a domestic factory to produce ammunition of various calibers in Kosovo.
