Kuwait reported its first military death Monday amid the Middle East’s regional escalation that began with the U.S.-Israeli offensive on Iran.

In a statement, the Kuwaiti Armed Forces General Staff said Sgt. Walid Majid Suleiman, a member of Kuwait’s naval forces, “was martyred while on duty.”

The military did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Escalation after large-scale strikes

Regional tensions escalated Saturday when the U.S. and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran, killing several senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In response, Tehran carried out drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Gulf countries that host U.S. assets, further widening the conflict.
