The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) and Türkiye’s Foundation for Islamic Scholars held a conference at Eyüp Sultan Mosque, uniting 150 scholars from 50 countries to condemn Israel’s war in Gaza.
The conference at Eyüp Sultan Mosque began with a prayer led by President of Religious Affairs Ali Erbas, followed by a press briefing featuring speeches of the religious figures.
The conference, titled "Islamic and Humanitarian Responsibility: Gaza," is organized to discuss Israel’s "genocidal war" and the Islamic world’s humanitarian responsibilities.
According to the statement of the conference, the main aim is to mobilize the Islamic world and the international community to halt the attacks, open humanitarian corridors, and ensure aid reaches Gaza's people.
It also emphasizes the need for an "Islamic alliance" to counter what it calls genocide, racism, and expansionist ambitions.
Ali al-Qaradaghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, said, “We are not here merely to condemn, but to build a global front of scholars, thinkers, and free people to confront the new Nazism.”
The statement went on to warn of what Netanyahu has termed “Greater Israel.” “Israel’s crimes have not stopped at Gaza’s borders; their expansionist project seeks to seize more Arab and Muslim lands,” it said.
The statement further highlights the importance of reviving the spirit of the Hilfu’l-Fudul (Pact of Virtues) to hold perpetrators of atrocities accountable.
This conference… reaffirms that Gaza is not only a Palestinian issue; it is an issue of the entire Ummah and a just human cause that no one has the right to abandon.
Professor Nasrullah Haci Muftuoglu, president of the Islamic Scholars Foundation, said the weeklong program will include 18 sessions on Gaza, Jerusalem, and the wider Palestinian cause.
He stressed that sanctions and boycotts against Israel are “a priority based on Sharia and international humanitarian law.”
The conference runs until Aug. 29 and will conclude at Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque with the “Istanbul Declaration,” outlining political, humanitarian, and legal steps in support of Palestinians.
