Israeli Democrats leader Yair Golan warned Sunday that the possibility of another conflict with Iran was increasing and said Israel’s security must not become a tool in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political struggle to remain in power.

“The likelihood of another round of fighting with Iran is growing,” Golan wrote on U.S. social media platform X, adding that repeated rounds of conflict with Iran demonstrated what he described as Netanyahu’s failure.

His comments came amid Israeli and U.S. media reports suggesting that Israel and Washington could launch another attack on Iran after the U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Golan argued that Netanyahu lacked the public trust, “moral legitimacy” and “basic capacity” needed to manage another conflict with Iran.

He called for an alternative government to be formed as soon as possible, saying Israel’s security and the safety of its citizens were at stake.

Golan calls for alternative government

Golan said he, Gadi Eisenkot, Avigdor Lieberman, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid had extensive familiarity and experience with Israel’s security establishment and were committed to working together for the country’s security.

He criticized Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir for continuing to hold key positions.

“This is a danger to Israel. It must end,” Golan said.

He added that Israel’s security should not be allowed to become “a tool in Netanyahu’s political survival struggle.”

Election leaves no bloc with majority

Golan’s remarks followed last Tuesday’s parliamentary election, in which neither Netanyahu’s bloc nor opposition parties secured enough seats to form a government.

Preliminary results showed Netanyahu’s bloc winning 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while Jewish opposition parties won 48 and Palestinian parties secured 19.

All blocs remained short of the 61 seats needed for a parliamentary majority.

The results have left several possible outcomes, including a government supported by Palestinian parties, a unity government or another election.

Netanyahu faces corruption trial, ICC warrants

Netanyahu, 76, is facing an ongoing corruption trial on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He could face imprisonment if convicted.

He has also been wanted by the International Criminal Court since 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians during Israel’s war on Gaza, which began in October 2023.
