Iran warned Sunday that any new war with the U.S. could last longer than the previous conflict, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it was identifying new targets and preparing operations across broader geographical areas.
“A potential future war could last longer than previous conflict, and the American president would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions of its conclusion,” Iranian army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia said, according to Iranian state television.
The warning came as Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohebbi said recent directives from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had opened “a new chapter” in Iran’s approach to any future conflict.
“In a conflict with the United States, there are no geographical limitations,” Mohebbi said in remarks carried by Iran’s state-run Tasnim news agency.
He said Iran had defined a “vast theatre” for inflicting damage on an enemy and achieving what he described as maximum deterrence.
According to Mohebbi, the IRGC has begun identifying new targets and planning operations across new geographical areas.
He said Iran’s armed forces were now more prepared than before to deliver what he described as a decisive response.
Mohebbi’s remarks followed directives issued by Khamenei during a recent meeting with senior military commanders.
According to the account, Khamenei said any threat, regardless of its scale or nature, should receive an immediate and effective response without geographical restrictions.
He also said that if Iran’s adversaries resumed military or what Tehran describes as terrorist attacks, Iran’s armed forces and population would determine when and under what conditions the confrontation would end.
Mohebbi said the objective of “maximum deterrence” was to prevent other countries from adopting hostile political positions toward Iran or threatening its territory.
