Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday they ordered the army to strike Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, where Iran-backed Hezbollah holds sway.

The order came despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire in Lebanon that took effect on April 17 and was later extended through early July.

In a joint statement, Netanyahu and Katz said the strikes were ordered in response to what they called Hezbollah’s repeated ceasefire violations and attacks on Israeli cities and citizens.

Israel says Hezbollah violated ceasefire

“In light of the repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the terrorist organization Hezbollah and the attacks on our cities and citizens, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have instructed the IDF to strike terror targets in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut,” the statement said.

Netanyahu claimed the army had been instructed to target what Israel described as “terrorist targets” in the area.

The Dahiyeh district is known as a stronghold of Hezbollah in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Attacks continue despite truce

The strike order came as Israel continues attacks despite the U.S.-mediated truce.

The ceasefire took effect on April 17 and was later extended through early July.

According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed more than 3,400 people across the country.
