Explosions were heard across Tehran again Thursday morning, leaving residents uncertain whether to remain in the city or attempt to leave, according to reports and witness accounts.
Semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that loud explosions were heard in the capital earlier in the day.
A resident who recently fled Tehran told CNN that the bombardment appeared widespread.
“The bombing is everywhere—north, south, east, west. They seem to be going for anything and everything,” the resident said, speaking anonymously for fear of reprisals.
The man said he left Tehran with his wife, a doctor, several nights earlier and described the uncertainty residents face as attacks continue.
“You never know what or who is a target,” he said.
Earlier this week, a television and radio antenna near their home was struck, shaking the surrounding neighborhood.
The couple is now staying in a small town near Damavand, Iran’s tallest peak. According to the resident, nights there are filled with the sound of fighter jets, although no strikes have hit their area so far.
The resident said many friends and relatives remain in Tehran despite the ongoing explosions.
“A lot of friends and family are staying put in Tehran for now, because the thinking is no matter where you go, something there will be targeted,” he said.
He added that leaving the city presents additional concerns for many residents. Traveling south raises fears of encountering foreign forces near borders, while heading north could mean becoming trapped in heavy traffic along the Chalus highway.
“Many people are thinking it’s better to just stay where you are,” he said.
