Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has instructed the government to send a high-level delegation to UNESCO for consultations on aligning Palestinian curricula with the organization’s international standards, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The move is considered one of the most significant official steps in the ongoing effort to reform the education sector, which the Palestinian leadership prioritizes at this stage.

According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, the directive came during a phone call between Abbas and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany of Egypt, who recently assumed his post at the organization.

WAFA reported that the two discussed prospects for strengthening cooperation and the role UNESCO could play in supporting curriculum development and helping Palestine align its educational system with global benchmarks.

The agency said the step comes “as part of the State of Palestine’s efforts to develop education in form and substance, while preserving the essence of Palestinian national consciousness, and ensuring alignment with UNESCO standards and international commitments.”

It also reflects the leadership’s approach to modernizing the educational process—including teaching methods and content—in a way that meets international requirements without compromising Palestinian national identity.

The move is viewed as deepening cooperation with specialized international institutions and affirming Palestine’s readiness to engage in long-term development programs in the education sector.

It also represents an effort to make use of El-Enany’s new position at UNESCO—as the first Egyptian to lead the organization—in a way that strengthens Arab representation and provides additional support for Palestinian cultural and educational priorities.
