Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the positions expressed in a joint statement by Türkiye and Saudi Arabia on Palestinian rights, describing them as “honorable, principled and resolute.”

In a written statement, Abbas said he welcomed the two countries’ emphasis on making a cease-fire permanent, ending the occupation in the Gaza Strip and enabling the Palestinian Authority to fully resume its responsibilities there.

He said these steps would contribute to a process leading to a complete end to the Israeli occupation.

Two-state solution and humanitarian concerns

Abbas highlighted the joint statement’s clear call for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international law, the U.N. resolutions and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative.

He said this approach supports the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people.

He also said he shared Türkiye’s and Saudi Arabia’s deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, ongoing Israeli attacks, the obstruction of humanitarian aid and restrictions at border crossings.

Abbas welcomed calls for opening all crossings without obstacles to allow aid to reach Gaza.

Call for civilian protection

Abbas underlined the importance of the statement’s emphasis on protecting civilians, avoiding attacks on vital infrastructure and urging the international community to pressure Israeli occupation authorities to comply with international and international humanitarian law.

He said Türkiye’s and Saudi Arabia’s stances in support of international law and the Palestinian people’s rights to freedom and independence strengthen international efforts toward a just and comprehensive peace.

Joint declaration after Riyadh talks

Following President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent visit to Riyadh, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia issued a 31-point joint declaration addressing regional issues, including Palestine and Gaza.

The statement expressed deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, ongoing Israeli attacks, and obstacles to humanitarian aid and border crossings and stressed the need to open all crossings across the Gaza Strip without hindrance to ensure the delivery of much-needed assistance.
