Israel’s announcement of the death of Al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obaida has sparked widespread debate on social media, as no official Palestinian confirmation or denial has been issued so far.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Sunday the death of Abu Obaida following a joint operation carried out by the Israeli army and the Shin Bet in the Al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City.
Sources within Hamas denied a statement attributed to leader Izzat al-Rishq regarding the news, describing it as “forged” and urging the public not to spread the Israeli narrative or circulate inaccurate counter reports.
They emphasized that any official position will be communicated only through authorized Palestinian channels.
Journalist Mohammed Haniyeh noted that Abu Obaida’s family shared photos of his three children, their names, and details of their Quran memorization but have not released any information confirming or denying the fate of Abu Obaida himself.
Journalist Abboud Battah wrote on his page that he will not announce Abu Obaida’s death until an official statement is issued by the competent authorities.
“The enemy is known only for lies and deception, and truth is not taken from the mouths of aggressors but from reliable sources,” he said.
Some observers are questioning the reasons behind the group’s delay.
Noting that this is not the first time Hamas has taken so long to affirm the martyrdom of its members, the Palestinian public awaits an official statement to put an end to speculation amid calls for caution regarding news from Israeli media.
