Iraqi protesters clashed Sunday evening with security forces near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad during demonstrations against the U.S.-Israel war on Iran, Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalists reported.
Protesters attempted to storm Baghdad’s Green Zone, where the U.S. Embassy is located, but security forces used tear gas to disperse them.
An AFP photographer saw ambulances arriving at the scene and reported cases of suffocation from tear gas, as well as hearing what sounded like live gunfire.
It marked the second attempt on Sunday by protesters to enter the heavily fortified area after earlier clashes in the morning with security forces deployed in large numbers.
The U.S. Embassy had earlier warned that protests near its compound “may turn violent” and advised U.S. nationals to “remain alert to their surroundings and avoid large crowds.”
The embassy also warned of “active threats to U.S. interests in Iraq including restaurants, businesses, and individuals.”
Telegram channels and social media platforms close to pro-Iran armed groups had called on people to take part in the demonstrations.
