Qatar appoints Faisal Al Hanzab as ambassador to Türkiye

Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani issued Amiri Decree No. 1 of 2026 on Sunday, Jan. 4, appointing Faisal Abdullah Hamad Abdullah Al Hanzab as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye, Qatari media reported.

The decree stipulates that it shall be implemented and take effect from the date of its issuance and be published in the Official Gazette.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Nasser bin Jassim Al Thani was serving in this position for about four years.

Faisal bin Abdullah Hamad Abdullah Al Hanzab was born on Jan. 28, 1975, and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 18, 1994.

Al Hanzab holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Beirut in 2000. He began his career in the Protocol Department from July 18, 1994, to Sept. 11, 1999, before moving to the Department of International Organizations, Conferences, and Agreements from Sept. 11, 1999, to July 25, 2001.

Published information indicates that he served at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York from Aug. 20, 2001, to Dec. 25, 2007, and later at Qatar’s Permanent Mission in Geneva from Dec. 26, 2007, to Aug. 9, 2010.

From internal duties to consular responsibilities

He served at the Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from Nov. 1, 2010, to Dec. 10, 2012.

He also held the post of consul general of the State of Qatar in Houston from Feb. 13, 2012, to June 14, 2013, before serving as consul general in Los Angeles from June 25, 2012, to Feb. 21, 2014.

From Geneva to human rights, then ambassador

According to his biography, Al Hanzab was appointed as Qatar’s permanent representative to the State of Qatar’s Permanent Mission in Geneva from Feb. 28, 2014, to Dec. 30, 2016.

He also served as director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Feb. 28, 2016, to Oct. 15, 2019.

The biography noted that he has served as Qatar’s ambassador to Azerbaijan since Oct. 18, 2019, and was appointed in 2023 as a special envoy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
