Romania said Sunday it was summoning Russia's ambassador after the NATO member's military shot down a third drone in as many days near its border with Ukraine.
Romanian forces shot down a drone that entered the country's airspace Sunday, President Nicusor Dan said.
"A new drone was shot down this morning, at 10.13 a.m., by an F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, over Romania's territorial waters, in the Sulina-Chilia area," Dan wrote on X.
He said the incident followed the downing of drones by Romanian forces on Friday and Saturday.
Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta said on Facebook that an F-16 fighter jet shot down the drone over the Black Sea five minutes after it entered the country's airspace.
Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said Romania was summoning Russia's ambassador following "repeated violations."
Dan said an investigation by the General Prosecutor's Office found that the drone shot down Friday was a Shahed-type drone used by Russia in its war against Ukraine.
Investigations into the drone incidents Saturday and Sunday were still ongoing, he added.
"Romania's diplomatic protest against the Russian Federation will be based on these investigations," Dan said.
"It is inadmissible and intolerable for the Russian Federation to continue violating Romania's airspace, which is, at the same time, NATO airspace and European Union airspace," he added.
Romania has seen frequent drone incursions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 but had not shot down any until Friday.
The country has reported dozens of drone incursions during the war.
One drone struck an apartment building in Galati, on the border with Ukraine, in May, wounding two people.
In 2025, Romania's parliament adopted a law allowing the military to shoot down drones that breach its airspace.
