Several explosions rang out across Kyiv on Friday after Ukrainian officials warned of a rare daytime ballistic missile attack from Russia, as air defenses operated over the capital.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalists heard multiple loud blasts during the alert.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to take shelter and said air defense systems were active in the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s defense forces struck a key military enterprise in Kirov, Russia, that supplies components for Russian aircraft and missile systems.
He said those systems were used in large-scale attacks against Ukrainian cities and communities.
“I thank our warriors for their precision. Our response is entirely justified,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media.
Zelenskyy said what he described as Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” had also proved effective against an oil facility nearly 1,350 kilometers away.
He added that Ukrainian forces had carried out other successful strikes.
Zelenskyy said an operation against Russian logistics supplying the military with drone components, navigation equipment and military gear remained underway.
He previously praised strikes against warehouses linked to Russian e-commerce company Wildberries, which he claimed was providing drone components for the Russian military.
Zelenskyy thanked units of Ukraine’s armed forces, intelligence agencies and Security Service involved in the operations.
“Glory to Ukraine,” he said.
Romania shot down a drone inside its airspace Friday for the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said.
Dan said a Romanian pilot flying an F-16 downed the drone at about 11 a.m. local time, or 8 a.m. GMT.
“We had a drone in our airspace. It was shot down a few minutes ago,” Dan told a news conference.
He said the drone was brought down over an uninhabited area and that an investigation was underway.
