Severe flooding along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast on Oct. 3 claimed the lives of four people, including two rescuers and caused extensive property damage in coastal communities. The resort town of Elenite was among the hardest-hit areas, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in multiple municipalities.

Southeastern Bulgaria was hit by heavy rainfall on Friday, with 200–250 millimeters falling within just a few hours. The sudden deluge overwhelmed drainage systems and local rivers, resulting in flash floods that swept through streets, homes, and tourist accommodations.

In Elenite, floodwaters inundated streets, washed away vehicles and caravans, and caused extensive damage to homes, hotels, and campsites. Eyewitnesses reported torrents of muddy water rushing through the town, while social media videos showed cars being carried away by the current.

The Bulgarian government declared a state of emergency in several coastal municipalities, including Nessebar, Tsarevo and Burgas, after flooding disrupted transportation networks and cut off access to several towns. Authorities advised residents and tourists in low-lying areas to evacuate immediately.

Interior Minister Daniel Mitov confirmed that the fatalities included two rescuers: a border police officer and a tractor driver. Another victim drowned at a hotel, while a 58-year-old woman was found buried under mud in her home after being reported missing by her husband.

Widespread damage across coast

Floodwaters caused significant damage to roads, bridges, and power infrastructure, leaving thousands without electricity. Homes and businesses sustained heavy damage, while local tourism, a major economic driver for the region, faces setbacks as resorts and campsites evaluate losses.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage while prioritizing the rescue of stranded residents and tourists. Temporary shelters have been set up food, clean water and medical aid are being provided to affected communities.
