Shells of unknown origin fell near Damascus's Mezzah airport on Tuesday, marking the second unexplained blast in the Syrian capital within three days, according to state-run Al Ekhbariya television.

Syria's state news agency reported hearing an explosion in the vicinity of Damascus earlier Tuesday and said the matter was under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed information about casualties or the source of the projectiles that struck near the military facility in western Damascus.

The Tuesday incident follows a Sunday explosion in central Damascus that local media attributed to an improvised explosive device, raising questions about security in the capital.

Sunday blast near luxury hotel goes unclaimed

Sky News Arabia's Damascus correspondent reported hearing Sunday's explosion, which Al-Mayadeen said occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel in the city's commercial center. Syrian security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched an investigation.

No casualties were reported from Sunday's incident, and officials have issued no public statements regarding either blast. The lack of official communication has left residents and observers uncertain about the nature of the security threats.
