A strike in western Iraq on Wednesday killed at least seven security personnel, Iraq’s defense minister said, marking the second such attack in two days targeting forces in Anbar province.

Iraq’s defense ministry said at least seven security members were killed and 13 others injured in an attack in the country’s western Anbar province.

“The Habbaniyah Military Dispensary and Habbaniyah Works Branch under Habbaniyah Base Command, affiliated with the Ministry, were subjected to a treacherous air attack,” a ministry statement said.

It called the strike “a dangerous escalation,” stressing that targeting medical facilities represents “a grave crime.”

The base hosts Iraqi police, soldiers from the regular army and Hashed al-Shaabi forces, a security official told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Second strike in 2 days

The attack followed a similar strike Tuesday that killed 15 Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) fighters.

In a U.S. airstrike carried out Tuesday in Anbar province, 15 members of the Iran-aligned Hashd al-Shaabi were killed.

“This criminal act represents a dangerous escalation that must be taken seriously and requires those responsible to be held accountable. Targeting medical facilities is a grave crime in every respect because it targets institutions dedicated to saving lives. These cowardly attacks will not prevent our personnel from carrying out their duties; on the contrary, they will further strengthen their determination to serve their country and nation," the statement said.

The ministry also said that it "reserves the right to take all necessary steps within the framework of international law in response to this attack."

The statement did not specify who carried out Wednesday’s attack.

The U.S. and Israel have maintained airstrikes on Iran since Feb. 28, killing so far more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
