Thousands of people march in Tunis against the administration of President Kais Saied over worsening living conditions and the continued closure of parliament on July 25.
The demonstration was organized at the call of the National Salvation Front and the Ennahda Movement. It was held on the 69th anniversary of the proclamation of the Tunisian Republic and the fifth anniversary of the extraordinary measures announced by Saied on July 25, 2021.
July 25 also marked the day in 2021 when President Kais Saied suspended Parliament’s activities, lifted members of Parliament's immunity, and dismissed then-Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, citing the country’s circumstances at the time.
Following the dissolution of Parliament, the president’s powers were expanded through a referendum held on July 25, 2022. While Saied and his supporters argued that this was necessary, the opposition labeled it a “coup.”
At the demonstration, participants called for the release of political prisoners, the protection of rights and freedoms, and solutions to the country’s economic problems with banners reading “No water,” “No sanitation,” and “No electricity,” alongside the national flag.
At the demonstration, protesters chanted two of the symbolic slogans of the 2011 Jasmine Revolution: “Degage (Get out)” and “The people want the regime to go."
