U.S. President Donald Trump announced early Tuesday that a cease-fire between Iran and Israel has taken effect, urging both nations not to violate the agreement that ends what he called "The 12 Day War."
"THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The cease-fire came into effect at 4 a.m. GMT Tuesday following hours of intensified hostilities during which Iran launched six waves of missile attacks targeting Israeli territory, according to reports.
Trump had previously announced Monday that Israel and Iran agreed to a "complete and total" cease-fire with a phased implementation. Under the arrangement, Iran would initiate the cease-fire first, followed by Israel 12 hours later, and a full end to hostilities would be declared at the 24th hour.
In the hours leading up to the cease-fire, Israeli media reported that approximately 15 ballistic missiles were fired in six waves of retaliation from Iran.
According to Israeli media, five waves occurred shortly before the cease-fire took effect at 7 a.m., while the final ballistic missile wave occurred after the ceasefire came into force.
According to Israeli emergency medical service Magen David Adom, the death toll from a rocket strike on a residential building in the southern city of Beersheba has risen to four, with 22 people injured, including 20 with minor injuries and others affected by panic from the attack.
One missile directly hit a seven-story building in Beersheba, with rescue operations continuing in the area where the death toll could rise further, according to reports.
Israeli media reported that approximately 15 ballistic missiles were fired in six waves of retaliation following Trump's cease-fire announcement.
The conflict escalated dramatically Sunday after the U.S. bombed Iran's Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities. Trump had announced that these key nuclear sites were "completely destroyed" in the air strikes.
Iran retaliated Monday by launching a barrage of missiles at the U.S. military's Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said U.S. forces, alongside Qatar, "successfully" defended against the attack with no casualties to American or Qatari personnel.
Israeli authorities reported at least 25 people killed and hundreds injured in Iranian missile attacks since the conflict began. In Iran, at least 430 people were killed and more than 3,500 wounded in Israeli assaults, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.
Israeli media reported that Qatar mediated the cease-fire agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed ministers not to speak publicly about the truce.
The Israeli army announced that citizens no longer need to remain near shelters following the cease-fire implementation.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said early Tuesday that as of that time, there was "no agreement" on any cease-fire between Iran and Israel.
"However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterward," Araghchi said on X.
Trump described the agreement as having "transformative potential" and congratulated both countries "on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end" what he called "The 12 Day War."
"This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will!" Trump stated.
The president also credited U.S. B-2 pilots for their role in achieving the agreement, saying their "perfect hit" brought everyone together to "make the deal."
