U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration was making major progress with Iran, insisting Tehran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon and saying the U.S. would leave Iran “very quickly.”

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling to Wisconsin, Trump said the situation with Iran was moving in Washington’s favor.

“We are having great success with Iran,” Trump said.

He repeated that Iran would not be permitted to develop nuclear weapons.

“They’re not going to have a nuclear weapon. They are in no position to have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Trump says Iran process ‘going quite well’

After landing in Wisconsin, Trump told reporters that the situation with Iran “seems to be going quite well.”

Asked when he last held discussions on the issue, Trump did not respond.

Later, during a gathering with farmers, Trump said the U.S. had acted to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear threat.

“This was going to be a very capable country that was going to have a massive nuclear presence, and we weren’t going to let that happen, nobody wanted that to happen, and we’ve largely finished that,” Trump said.

“One way or the other, it’s finished. It’s either finished with a piece of paper or finished a more difficult way,” he added.

US to leave Iran ‘very quickly,’ Trump says

Trump said the U.S. would come out of Iran soon, either through an agreement or through a tougher approach.

“We’re going to come out of Iran very quickly,” Trump said.

“And it’s going to be very strong, one way or the other, whether it’s a piece of paper or the very tough way,” he added.

During his remarks in Wisconsin, Trump said the U.S. had to eliminate what he called a nuclear threat.

“We had to eliminate a nuclear threat. We couldn’t let that happen. Nobody wanted that to happen. We’ve largely handled it. You’ll see, one way or another, this is finished,” he said.

Trump also said energy prices in the U.S. would fall quickly after the Iran process is completed, asking Americans for patience.

Regional tensions have remained high since late February after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

A Pakistan-brokered cease-fire took effect April 8, while indirect contacts aimed at reaching a broader understanding have continued.
